How much electricity does an air purifier use?

An air purifier often runs for many hours a day, so it is fair to ask what it adds to your electricity bill. You can work it out from two numbers: the purifier's wattage and the rate on your bill.

Work it out in three steps

  1. 1

    Find the wattage

Check the power rating on the product or its label. The Air Purifier XR2 is rated at 14 W.

  2. 2

    Work out units per day

Multiply the watts by the hours it runs each day, then divide by 1,000. One unit on your bill is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). For the XR2: 14 × 24 ÷ 1,000 = 0.336 units a day.

  3. 3

    Multiply by your rate

Multiply the units by the rate per unit on your own electricity bill.

8 hours0.1123.36
12 hours0.1685.04

Calculated from the XR2's rated power of 14 W. 1 unit = 1 kWh.

What it costs

Electricity rates in Pakistan depend on your electricity company, your monthly usage slab and taxes, so use the rate from your own bill.

Illustrative example: if your bill works out to Rs. 60 per unit, running the XR2 around the clock for 30 days uses about 10 units, which is about Rs. 600.
